Since we began our San Diego Asian
Film Festival in 2000, it never ceased to amaze me how the Filipino
American community would come out in droves to attend our Filipino film
programs. The interest, support, and demand for films about the
Filipino and Fil-Am experience are overwhelming here in San Diego
County.
So, it is with pride that we present the country’s first year-long,
Philippine Cinema Showcase (PCS) at the Chula Vista UltraStar, where we
are creating a home for the preservation of the Philippine culture
through media arts. How exciting it is to showcase Filipino films and
other programs EVERYDAY of the year!
Our goal is to present meaningful, quality film programs that will make
you laugh and cry, educate and inspire, and give you a diverse view of
Filipino life both abroad and in America. We will also schedule older,
inaccessible films as a retrospective on how far Filipino cinema has
come. And from time-to-time, we may also have special presentations and
performances at PCS… just to shake things up a bit.
If we can prove that this Philippine Cinema Showcase is successful,
this may serve as a national model in other large cities across the
U.S. So we need YOUR HELP by simply attending the films and passing on
the good word of PCS.
Finally, I want to emphasize that the whole reason why we’re able to
have a Philippine Cinema Showcase is because of the generosity and
support of UltraStar Cinemas—especially CEOs John Ellison and Alan
Grossberg, as well as former film commissioner Wally Schlotter. I also
want to personally thank our dear friend, Arnold Marquez, whose passion
and commitment to PCS are unrivaled. (Thank you Arnold, for helping us
build this dream!)
Maraming Salamat… and hope to see you at the movies!
